With their low maintenance and nice high-gloss finish, polished concrete floors have become the preferred choice of flooring for retail and commercial businesses. During home renovations and retail shop face-lifts, many Canberra businesses and homeowners are opting for a high-gloss polished concrete floor over all other flooring options. However, the downside to this is we often find the concrete floor becomes damaged when removing the existing flooring material which is often difficult to repair. On the other hand, the concrete mix used for the flooring may have been incorrect for the climate and some scaling/spalling may be present.
The process required to repair carpet tack holes, epoxy coatings, rubber, glue scalling/spalling etc can become labour intensive and we often find that a concrete overlay to be the most economical solutions for damaged concrete floors.

However, we find most home and retail shop owners prefer seamless high-gloss perfect polished concrete finishes. This is where we highly recommend the concrete overlay process to completely cover the cracks, holes and scaling concrete floor. The concrete overlay provides a ‘clean slate’ so to speak, which we can then achieve the desired polished concrete finish as requested by the client.
A polishable concrete overlay is by far the preferred choice for damaged concrete, due to its quick turnaround timeframe and versatility. We can even apply a concrete overlay to a tiled floor and then polish the concrete overlay which completely transforms the floor in just a couple of days.
Decorative aggregates, saw-cuts and seamless finishes are all achievable with a concrete overlay. The end result cannot be differentiated between a completely new polished concrete slab and an overlay, they are simply that good.
The inherent benefits of a polished concrete overlay carry across from what a polished concrete slab offers which is environmentally friendly, mold/mildew, stain resistant and more affordable.
The successful installation of a polished concrete overlay is all about timing and floor preparation can be a time-consuming process. Before the concrete overlay is applied, the existing concrete surface must be reprofiled to ensure we have a consistent surface to work with. Once the existing concrete surface is prepared, we need to ensure that timing of mix to the pour line is consistent and ‘aggregate seeding and cutting’ is added at the correct time (if required) and last of all the polishing process.
We can achieve high detail and artistic designs, patterns colours stains with a concrete overlay, when compared to simply polishing an existing floor.
